A funny, and frustrating, example of this occurred recently when Jason Perlow tried to explain why Limelight Networks was betther than Akamai at serving Olympics content for NBC. Perlow stacks generalization upon inaccuracy and ends up mistating the facts and miseducating readers. All of this can be clearly, and simply detangled.

Interview with Level 3 CEO Jim Crowe on CDN Business
2008
In trading some e-mails with Jim Crowe recently, he was nice enough to spend some time to answer questions about Level 3’s (LVLT) CDN business for publishing here on the blog. While Level 3 has been pretty quiet in regards to their CDN business and the customers they have been winning, make no mistake that they plan to be a serious competitor. And I’m not just repeating the company line. I see it from talking to customers, learning of new contract wins and by seeing all of the pieces of the CDN ecosystem they are finishing to put in place.

BitGravity’s Philosophy: Take It Easy
2008
BitGravity’s seemingly slow approach in terms of CDN sales might be changing thanks to some new customer wins and the recent announcement of $2.5 million in funding.
An article on The Motley Fool caught my eye earlier this week, since even though Fool focuses on publicly-traded companies this one discussed a streaming content delivery network (CDN) company that’s not publicly traded. I followed up with the company, BitGravity, and spent some time talking to the CEO and Founder, Perry Wu.
Wu’s demeanor in the Fool article was described as brash, but I’ll chalk it up to a founder’s passion as I found him more laid back (or maybe I’m just in New York too much these days) and open to most any question I asked. He may have a bit of a right to be brash, though, as they’ve just closed a round of funding.
“In the past 18 months, CDN and P2P-based delivery vendors have raised over $300 million to build out and deploy content delivery services,” said Dan Rayburn in his BusinessOfVideo blog. “So it should be no surprise to hear that BitGravity announced last week that it had raised $2.5 million from Allen and Company and Blake Krikorian, the co-founder and CEO of Sling Media.
CDN Roundup: Limelight, Internap, BitGravity
2008
It’s been a busy week in the content delivery network (CDN) business. Here’s a look at the latest headlines: Limelight Networks (LLNW) reported its second quarter earnings yesterday, with sales of $30.3 million, slightly above analyst expectations. See coverage from Eric Savitz at Barron’s and Silicon Alley Insider, which live-blogged the analyst call. Or see the full transcript of the call at Seeking Alpha. Internap Network Services (INAP) “may be approaching a moment of truth for its CDN business, which is struggling on a number of levels,” according to Contentinople, citing analysis from Colby Synesael at Merriman Curhan Ford. The Motley Fool has a profile of BitGravity, looking at its backers, technology and market position. The hook was BitGravity’s announcement that it had raised $2.5 million from Allen & Company and individuals including Sling Media co-founder Blake Krikorian.
Crunch Time for Internap CDN?
2008
Internap Network Services Corp. (Nasdaq: INAP) may be approaching a moment of truth for its content delivery network (CDN) business, which is struggling on a number of levels. The company’s share price has taken a 30 percent haircut after it announced weak sales in an earnings call last week. In addition, a significant number of the company’s CDN sales and marketing team has been fleeing to competitors, according to industry sources. Other complications include the company’s struggle with outages that occurred during the integration of VitalStream’s CDN into Internap’s IP network. After sales declined last quarter, one analyst says it might be time for Internap Network Services Corp. (Nasdaq: INAP) to “blow up” its CDN business. Merriman Curhan Ford & Co. analyst Colby Synesael says, “Even if they do improve the solution to fix the scalability, in the hands of Internap no one’s going to be willing to go to that [CDN] platform.” “They’re probably going to blow up the CDN business,” Synesael says. “It probably doesn’t make much sense in their hands anymore, and they’re probably going to write that down next quarter anyway.” Shares of IP services provider Internap fell more than 30 percent last week, after the company reported a wider loss and reduced estimates for the second quarter in a row due to weak sales in CDN.
