LONDON, Oct 22, 2010 (BUSINESS WIRE) — Level 3 Communications, Inc. /quotes/comstock/15*!lvlt/quotes/nls/lvlt (LVLT 0.91, +0.05, +5.84%) today announced its work with London-based Stream UK to offer a joint live-streaming solution for enterprise customers using the Adobe(R) Flash Platform with support for HTTP. The solution allows business customers to stream live events within corporate environments while eliminating previous issues with firewall configuration and strain on the business’s network.

Stream UK is a master reseller of Level 3′s content delivery network (CDN) services within the Level 3 European Partner Programme. The company provides businesses worldwide with professional-level tools to manage and distribute multimedia content over the Internet.

"We believe that adaptive bit rate streaming over HTTP is the protocol of the future, and I can honestly say it’s the single most important advance we have made in the last decade," said Stream UK CEO Duncan Burbidge. "This solution leverages the international reach and performance of Level 3′s extensive CDN network alongside Stream UK’s own webcasting tools to provide an ideal offering for corporate viewers, mobile viewers, viewers on variable connections and for those paying bandwidth costs."

For enterprise customers, one of the primary advantages of live HTTP delivery over the previously used protocols is the ability to avoid a number of problems with firewall configurations, giving enterprise customers access to users within corporate environments.

"While video has become an increasingly important tool for businesses — both for internal and external purposes — until now, it’s been difficult if not impossible for companies to fully realize its potential due to technological limitations," said James Heard, president of European Markets at Level 3. "With Stream UK, we’ve been able to develop a solution that eliminates some of those barriers and gives our corporate customers the opportunity to stream live content to their audiences in new ways."

HTTP Dynamic Streaming is a protocol for on-demand and live adaptive bit rate video streaming over regular HTTP connections on the Adobe(R) Flash(R) Platform. It is designed to allow for high-quality video streaming that also fosters a better user experience for viewers, regardless of their connection speed. Leveraging its Internet Broadcast capabilities and video workflows, Level 3 delivers the HTTP adaptive bit rate video on the Adobe Flash Platform for distribution over its global CDN.

The companies recently demonstrated the capabilities of the new solution at Streaming Media Europe. Portions of the London conference were streamed live to registered online viewers during last week’s conference.
